An English In Kentucky

Suddenly something changes.  Spirits soar in harmonious glory and briefly there is an understanding of perfection.  No doubt this moment produces an agony for others.  And I can tell them what I am rarely able to tell myself.

"It's the way of the world," I can say.   "It builds character," I can say.  "Persevere,"  I can say.   But these suggestions have never comforted me.  I find them tired and reliant on a politics that has no empathy.   A mathematics of survival.   An objective that to my mind spells an ultimate doom.
