An English In Kentucky

September 22nd 2010    Tim Candler

Autumnal Equinox.   At high noon on the equator a person can walk around and see only the shadow of his hat.

I remember being marched out of class by an enthusiastic teacher from England.  A felt hat was part of our uniform.   We stood staring down at our feet.   Inevitably those few minutes were spent vigorously disproving the theory.

It wasn't a xenophobia so much.  Rather a combination of Teacher, England and schoolboy.  Nonetheless I think I do remember wondering at the thought of the sun directly above my head, with only my shoes in shadow.

Glorious days because none of us young scholars knew what Autumn meant.
