An English In Kentucky

I again feel it necessary to delineate my understanding of the colors blue and pink as they are associated with boy and girl children in the species I belong to.

Long before taupe and charcoal grey, both boy and girl babies dressed alike. White was clean and healthy for those who could afford it and little boys were allowed long hair unless they had lice or worked as chimney sweeps.

Sometime around the First World War it occurred to the commercially minded that they could sell twice as many baby clothes if boy babies and girl babies were dressed in different colors. And like mental patients we all fell head over heels for this brave new world.

But for over a thousand years the color blue had belonged to the Virgin Mary and pink was the color of Roses.
