The idea of the
pyramids of Egypt being built by skilled craftsmen and willing labor
gives perspective to current preoccupations, and persuades a mind to
look into the future where perhaps it might find solace in
physics. The Grand Theory is threatened by observation of
neutrinos travelling through rock from Cern in Switzerland to Gran Sasso
in the foot part of Italy.
It's always possible the
observation was a sordid political calculation designed to improve funding
for particle accelerators at a time of financial stress. But I would
like to believe that somewhere on the mainland of Europe there are minds
better able than mine to outpace the speed of light, remove harmony from
Einstein's universe and give me my slope in a random place.
