An English In Kentucky

Saturday September 1st 2012    Tim Candler

Cardinal Martini claimed that condoms, with respect to the spread of Aids,  were "the lesser of evils."  He felt no animosity to the idea of the ordination of women.  He argued that legal abortion would eliminate illegal abortion.  He leaned toward an idea that a terminally sickness gave its sufferer the right to put an end to it all.

He died yesterday, and but for news of his death from a number of sources, I don't think I ever would have known of his existence.   And, apart from his name, what surprises me most about Cardinal Martini is the report that he claimed his church was "two hundred years behind the times."
