Deadline is an aggravating word. As a boundary it's a
line in a prison that prisoners can cross only at the
risk of being shot. And it's a time limit after which
debts must be paid, assignments complete and it's a kind
endless threatening list that contributes mightily to
general ennui and that sort of mental alignment that
allows for something like slavery.
It's the case
that deadlines are more often other imposed than they are
self imposed. Which also adds to the aggravation of a jack
booted word that can stamp the corridors kicking in doors,
if permitted to. So what I'm going to say is that The
Letlander needs something like a deadline. And here I'm
trying to think in terms of flagpoles and little boats on
choppy seas, rather than punishment for crossing lines.
